Nomat: Underworld

After spending hours in my favorite chat room with no result about which movie to see, I took the chance to ask my chat friend Putry to come to Blok M Plaza Cineplex. One thing I knew, it was not about which movie to see, but how much I wanted to hang out and talk with somebody. She agreed to meet me there and just like me, she actually didn't have a clue about which movie to see.

I browsed a little bit and found out, out of three movies I considered good, I'd watched two of them. So that left us with Underworld Revolution.

The movie started off bad. The projectionist messed up with the sound system, so for like the first 5 minutes, we saw a non-talkie film, about people on horses pillaging a village at night. We booed to get the projectionist some attention but he didn't seem to response. Finally, after one of the audience stood up and told an usher about what was happening, the problem with sound was fixed.

The story was mainly about an arc villain, a vampire, who was looking for two pieces which made up a whole key to the tomb of his brother, which in turn would help him to seize the power over two races, lycans and vampires. The setting was mostly at night, which was reasonable, because vampires live in the darkness and avoid the daylight. Gloomy cinematography, plus low temperature of the theatre's air conditioning system, gave intense grave feeling to audience.

Classic story about eternal war between lycans and vampires was brought back in a different way. Characters and settings were of classical times, but the gadgets and vehicles were of modern times. If in the past, garlic, silver cross, and sun ray were used to hunt those spawns of Prince of Darkness, in the modern era new forms of weapons which carried the exact essence were used. In Underworld Revolution, heroes and villains carried silver gun with bullets that contained UV ray. How cool was that!

Kate Beckinsale had made her reputation in this kind of role. Before Underworld Revolution, she played the same character in Underworld and a vampire-hunting beauty in Van Helsing. Other main cast from Underworld also played in the sequel. Among casts who appeared only in the sequel is Sir Derek Jacobi as Alexander Corvinus, the grandfather of the two races, which was actually a human being playing God.

I was not expecting much from Underworld Revolution, but had a good time seeing the actions.
