Mobile Experiential Training on Java #1

Preparation

Inviting friends = spamming
Jadi belajar memposisikan diri jadi spammer kecil-kecilan.

Would spamming our own friends be considered gruesome considering the fact that spamming is mostly hurtful and doing something hurtful to our own buddies makes it even worse? probably the court might charge me with spamming of one degree. What would be my plea? Your Honor, isn't a man's deed judged by his intention? Actually my intention behind my crime is to invite them to the light, as they might be enlighted spiritually after they go to this workshop. Moreover, for my defense, the money they expense was actually nothing to compared the knowledge they get, not to mention sumptuos coffee break and delicious lunch.

Susahnya ngirim undangan ke teman-teman sendiri. They thought as I was among the people in charge for this event, I might give away free tickets. Sorry friends, no can do now. Perhaps later.

Registration Days

Nokia provided 20 - 25 seats, after we spared 5 seats for ourselves the committee and hosts, we planned for 20 participants. Although we had to wait until the last day, we finally made it.

While my colleague was taking phone calls, filling out participant profiles, and verifying transfers, I took care of the CDs, presentation handouts, name tags and explaining the route to the venue. At that moment, even I'd never been there although I could tell its location. Over the phone, I had to explain how to come to the place from Blok M, Fatmawati Hospital, and other directions. Next time, of course, we'd better include a map of the venue.

The D-Day

Check-In

Jam sembilan Nokia baru memulai aktivitasnya, tapi mereka bilang Hospitality Lounge baru siap jam 10. Wah!

Minor test for my patience limit
He asked almost all about the workshop presentation material and about the things the CD contains. Trying to look smart and helpful, I gave him what he might need as answers. Halfway through the conversation, I was wondering, though, whether he actually knew what the workshop was all about. With wide smile decorating my "front-desk person" face, I answered his question one by one and almost went too technical going with terms like "Websphere, Nokia SDK, mobile application" and stuffs. I am not very good with explaining something without any visual aids so that's why I was kinda restless to explaining all those things to someone who even himself was unsure about his own questions.

I might have refused him to come, not because I was cruel, but just because I was playing by the book. We had decided that participants should enregister before the workshop day and most of them did that. What if I register this man, knwoing that it would be a great unjustice for the other participants, who had willingfully finished the procedures the day before. At last, according to a policy made by my boss (I was no one to blame!) we settled down and we agreed to accept his registration.

What about lunch?
Hokben to the rescue!

First step into the future
The participants are either mobile technology developers, independent software developers, or students of schools of Information Technology.

They looked a little bit overwhelmed with the material. As we hoped to show them how mobile technology has embraced Java technology, the material covered various topics, like the warfare among Mobile Giants, enterprise software trend, technology breakthroughs vs business consideration, and some insights to IBM Websphere and Nokia SDK. Five hours of speech, demo, and dialogue about how Java shape the future of mobile technology could be the first step into the jungle, where providers and developers actually are, a step ahead of the mere vendors and users.

So much for Nokia Hospitality. Kinda makes you wonder, does "Nokia" mean "No Relation With"?

BTW, Mar... still interested about BaM? You haven't sent me your postal address, so I couldn't send a copy right away. And somehow, contacting you through yahoomail is as futile as resisting Borgs.
