Minang pop songs by Elly Kasim and Tiar Ramon

I've been listening to some of popular Minang songs of Elly Kasim and Tiar Ramon lately. I enjoy the choice of words used in the songs. Each is carefully handpicked by the composer to convey the richness of the message.

This feature is something that rarely exists in today's "so-called" MInang songs. They mostly lack "pantun" or rhymes or have it in the most underelaborated ways, use mundane words and phrases, have little variaty in themes. In other words, those songs don't reflect the greatness of traditional Minang life values.

That's why I prefer old Minang songs, songs which become hit at some decades ago and have been immortalized by remixings and repackagings. I personally don't mind about how a song is arranged in term of genre. A lot of Minang pop songs were originally arranged with latin flavor because at that time, latin music was popular. In some occasions, I like to play some songs like "Ondeh Ondeh" or "Malam Baiko" with bossanova groove. To suit current mainstream, those songs probably might be renewed by a touch of R&B or Hip Hop music, although traditional Minang instruments could maintain the original flavor.
