Ragunan

It was a slow and lazy Sunday. Despite the frowned look of people which basically send off a message "Going to Ragunan Zoo is tacky and it's even tackier because you live nearby", I pulled myself together to decide that it was the time for me to make a trip to the place located only a mere 5 kilometers away from home.

This animal haven is actually a favorite place of my dad whenever he seeks for solace. A number of times when my mom was having an arisan at home, he flight to this city forest and walked around to wait until the hectic occasion was over. He also loves to visit the zoo a couple of hours before dusk at Ramadan month, waiting for maghrib time.

Compared to 21 cineplex, this family entertainment place charges very low. It costs only Rp 3,300, which comprises ticket and insurance premium. The insurace offers compensation against any harm that may befall in the place where wild animals are sheltered. Should you get bitten by a cockatoo while you try to feed it with a lemon drop, or get infected by a nasty bird disease after your tongue gets too close to its cage, or get hit by a horse-cart, the zoo would help pay the treatment bill. But there are never good times to get all these, so it's better to be very careful and follow the instructions and warnings around this place.

Smutzer Primate Center is a good place to learn more about primates, in the same way that JCo is a good place to get good donuts. I hope they would open another branch here in Ragunan Zoo.

A primate visit his fellow primates

Unlike gorillas, this primate loves camera a lot

If you stand erect, you get to be on this canopy bridge. If you don't, you get to stay below among the bushes

On my last visit to this place, I was impressed of how they keep it clean and orderly, by imposing a strict rule of no food, drink, and cigarette allowed. This rule was also a prevention against the possibility of people poison those monkeys and apes with human food.

The lesson du-jour: Baboons have a funny nose and inflated red bottoms. Don't try to make them angry lest they would get angry and inflated the size of adult elephants. Or, it was the Hulk, I wonder ....

Living as an orangutan is never easy. First you should survive those illegal loggers. Then you should live alone as an infant when your mom gets shot by a hunter. Later, you should live in this confined place and watch those crazy faces of visitors who think that they could get you laugh.

They are molochs by day and superheroes by night. Or, was it Spiderman ...? The official said that they have proposed a petition to change their name into Apamolochdechs.

These are picturess of Taman Bali, a garden with artistic Balinese style. Probably a suggestion from those imported Sangeh monkeys who would like to have a homy atmosphere here in Jakarta.

To understand how hard it is to live as primates, the center provide a play ground where kids (also adults with interrupted childhood) could mimic the activity of these fellow creatures. Orangutans swing from one tree to another by bending the branch using their weight in the direction of the target tree. They also love to crawling upside-down along the branch. Here in the playground, kids could learn to live like primates. It's better for human adults not to get very involved in these activities as they might get seriously hurt. See, it's far safer to get self-pictures.
Rather than humiliating myself in the orangutan swing, I chose to ride the steps of this tree-house and get a panoramic view of the primate center. These trees are about fifty meter tall and there are a high possibility that you get dizzy once you're on top. This activity is not at all recommended to the weak-hearted.

Two hours of walking and climbing really took a lot out of me. So after I bid by goodbye to this primate center, I began to search a good spot to get a lunch. There are a lot of food stalls, each offering its own specialty. I chose friend chicken and rice, and a glass of cold soda to complete the meal. While enjoying the meal I realize that should be grateful with these luxury while those apes eat only the greens.

Look how satisfied I was! The meal gave a lot of energy for me to walk around and get more pictures of myself.

A playful pelican performs before the visitors. I eat fish not peanuts, it says. Please do take my picture, it adds. What a narcissitic creature!

People sell almost anything here in the entrance area of the zoo. Among batik shirts, leather sandals, toy cars, and cotton-candies, you could find these pet bunnies. They don't talk much probabaly because of those loud noise that they haven't get accostumed to. Also probably because rabbits don't talk.

If you don't like rabbit meat (because you think that they're too cute), you can choose to buy a hot and spicy kerak telor.
